Samples were taken at 1.3 m above ground.\nIn the lab.\nTo determine the wood specific gravity (WSG) and density at 12% moisture content in the wood cores, a one-centimetre long segment (without bark) from each core was cut. Segments were stabilised in a climatic chamber at 20°C and 65% relative humidity for 7 days to obtain 12% moisture content (MC). Each sample entry was examined for internal chemical consistency and evidence of contamination, using the following rules: 1\tion balance: The ion balance was calculated as (Sum of(cations) - Sum of(anions)) / (Sum of(cations) + Sum of(anions)). Some imbalance may occur because not all ions are analysed, e.g. bicarbonate or weak organic acids, so that a small positive balance is usually observed. Data were regarded as acceptable where the ion balance lay in the range -10% to +20%, except where the overall ion concentration (Sum of(cations + anions)) was less than 200 microequiv/l, where the uncertainties in individual ion analyses at low concentrations could lead to a greater uncertainty in calculating the ion balance; in such cases the range was extended from -10% to +30%. 2\tevidence of contamination: Samples with measured phosphate concentrations above 10 microequiv/l were eliminated. All samples with ammonium concentrations above 100 microequiv/l were examined, and those with potassium concentrations above 8 microequiv/l were eliminated. Finally, all samples with calcium concentrations greater than 50 microequiv/l which had higher calcium concentrations than sodium concentrations (in microequiv/l) were excluded as being contaminated with wind-blown dust. This last condition is rather conservative, i.e. some dust-contaminated samples may remain in the dataset; these usually were samples with very low sample volumes, so contributed little to the annual deposition. Two aluminium connections placed at the ends of the wooden dowel were used to mount the wooden dowel on the supporting frame and meant simple modes of movements could be singled out, namely rotation, vertical displacements, and horizontal displacements.\n\nThe motion of the LW dam under a range of different conditions was monitored using an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer which were installed within the longitudinal borehole of the wooden dowel. The accelerometer and gyroscope had an acquisition frequency set at 59.5 Hz, whereas the magnetometer recorded at 5 Hz. The sensor was equipped with an additional accelerometer measuring continuously; when the acceleration exceeded the user-defined threshold set at 390 mg, the sensor activated and started recording. Each experiment was repeated 10 times and the raw data from each of these experiments were stored in the ‘df_UC.csv’ files.\n\nThe raw data were processed to produce the measurements in the ‘df_UC_cal.csv’ files. First, the magnetometer data were upsampled to keep the same number of entries for each sensor. Second, each sensor was calibrated. Third, the orientation angles were computed combining the readings of accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer by a built-in function from the Python library AHRS (Attitude and Heading Reference System). Gravity compensation was applied to derive linear acceleration and gravity acceleration. The total, linear and gravity acceleration in the earth system along the x and y direction were also calculated using simple transformations. As part of a longer-term capture-mark-recapture study, three species of rodents were trapped with Sherman live-traps fortnightly for 12 months: wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus), yellow-necked mouse (Apodemus flavicollis) and bank vole (Myodes glaerolus). Upon capture, they were measured, weighted, sexed, aged and a tissue sample and a faecal sample were collected from all mouse individuals for genetic and microbiome analyses. All rodents were released to their location of capture. First time each individual was captured, they were injected with a permanent subcutaneous identification Radio-Frequency Identification(RFID)-tag (Passive Integrated Transponde-tag). The tagged rodents were subsequently tracked with a set of custom-made tracking devices (loggers). Loggers produced dense time-stamped occurrence data suitable for inferring spatio-temporal activity patterns of rodents, such as temporal niches, home ranges and social networks. The data were collected from a laboratory experiment testing the hypothesis that repeat periods of intensive flight during female oviposition affects egg provisioning and reduces offspring performance when larval development occurs on drought stressed host plants. The experiment involved stimulating female butterflies to fly for 5 minutes for 3 periods during oviposition; removing eggs from 5 different days during oviposition to be monitored for hatching; and removing a larva on day of hatching to be reared on a drought stressed host plant. For each larva, development time from hatching to pupation, pupal mass and survival to eclose as an adult was recorded. On eclosion, each offspring adult was sexed and the thorax weighed.
