The \"large deer impact risk\" map shows impact risk from red deer (Cervus elaphus), sika deer (Cervus nippon) and fallow deer (Dama dama). The values in the \"mean_risk\" column are impact risk scores predicted at 25-m pixel resolution, then averaged to woodland polygons. These data were collected throughout May-September 2021 on 19 woody species across 11 botanical families, and for 20 monocot species across 6 botanical families, including grasses, herbs and Velloziaceae.  32 plant functional traits were measured on the 19 woody species, and 17 plant functional traits were measured on the 20 monocot species. Trait collections followed standardised published methodologies. The palaeoecological proxies were analysed from two sets of duplicate parallel peat cores extracted from a closed-canopy forest hollow using a large Russian corer until the base of the peat sequence. Macrofossil analyses was performed on one set of cores and the other proxies were analysed on the second set. \nPollen analyses was performed at 2 cm intervals using standard techniques (as described in Moore et al., 1991) with dense-media separation following Nakagawa et al. (1998). Pollen nomenclature follows Bennett (1995-2007) with Corylus-type used to refer to indistinguishable grains of Corylus avellana and Myrica gale. Non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) and microcharcoal was identified and counted on pollen slides. NPP nomenclature follows Miola (2012). \nMacrofossil analyses was performed on 2 cm thick contiguous samples following the method described in Field et al. (2000) and samples were disaggregated prior to sieving by heating for 45 minutes in 8 % NaOH. Macrofossils were recorded as absolute values with undifferentiated remains recorded on a 4-point scale of rare (< 10 individuals), occasional (10-50 individuals), frequent (50-100 individuals), or abundant (> 100). \nLoss-on-ignition (LOI) methodology followed Heiri et al. (2001) at 2 cm sample intervals and sediment stratigraphy was described using the Troels Smith (1955) system.\nSite chronological controls includes eight Accelerator Mass Spectrometry radiocarbon dates and the base of a 210Pb curve. \nCoauthors have verified the data and it has been split into five comma separated .csv files which can be used for single or multi-proxy analyses. Sites were selected from those sites identified by Good as being calcareous grassland, heathland or woodland in 1930s. The subsampling approach used a variety of data sources, to identify current habitat types, including the UK Land Cover Map 2007, Natural England’s Priority Habitat Inventory and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), survey data from Horsfall, the Dorset Heathland survey and information on the Higher Level Stewardship schemes.\n\nWithin heathland and calcareous grassland sites the percentage cover of all plant species were recorded within five 1m quadrat squares. These were taken at random points within a W walk over the 50m sample square. Within woodlands plots, sampling was done slightly differently to enable recording of ground level plants and species within multiple canopy levels. Five 10m x 10m quadrats for tree and shrub cover were set in a cross shape across the 50m x 50m sample area (figure 1) one in each corner & one in the centre. Within these 10m x 10m quadrats canopy cover and presence of each canopy tree species was recorded. Within the centre of each 10 x 10 m quadrat (positioning by eye) a single 5 x 5 m quadrat was set out. Within these 5m x 5m quadrats, canopy cover and presence of shrubs, understory trees & tree saplings (> 1.5 m height, < 10 cm dbh) was recorded. In each 5 x 5 m quadrat a single 2 x 2 m quadrat was then also set up. Cover and presence of all herbaceous species, cover of tree seedlings (<1.5 m height) and ground-level cover of trunk of tree species if necessary were recorded.\n\nData were collected by experienced field ecologists, the same ecologists carried out all surveys. Data are consistent and reliable. Data were recorded into a spreadsheet as recorded in the field. This data can be used to compare with other woods using the same or a comparable methodology, investigate population trends or population-habitat relationships, or to monitor population change in future repeat surveys of the same woods. The subsampling approach used a variety of data sources, to identify current habitat types, including the UK Land Cover Map 2007, Natural England’s Priority Habitat Inventory  and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), survey data from Horsfall, the Dorset Heathland survey and information on the Higher Level Stewardship schemes.\n\nSample squares (50m x 50m plots) were randomly assigned within the original Good survey area prior to visit using ArcGIS. Pollinator abundance was recorded by walking two 50m transects at a steady pace. All butterflies were recorded to species level within a 5m imaginary box along the transect, in flight or nectaring. Bees, hoverflies, flies and beetles were also recorded to species whilst foraging within a 2m box along the 50m transect. All transects were walked within fixed weather criteria, these consisted of dry calm conditions with a minimum of 13 degC temperature, between 13-16 degC no more than 40% cloud cover; and wind speeds not exceeding 5 on the Beaufort scale. Transects were only walked within the time window of 10:00 to 16:00, when the above criteria were met.\n\nData were collected by experienced field ecologists, the same ecologists carried out all surveys. Soil was sieved to 2mm, samples were split between storage at -20°C for DNA extraction and 4°C. Site characteristics:  Site location was recorded using GPS.  Information on site history (including site age and former land-use) was recorded based on historic maps and information from landowners.  Surrounding land use cover was recorded based on the UCKCEH Landcover Map.\nNature and units of recorded variables and processing steps.  \npH: Soil was air dried and the five samples per site were pooled together. Ultrapure water was added and the samples agitated before values were measured with a pH probe. The pH reading was considered stable when the value did not vary by more than 0.02 units over five seconds. Electrical Conductivity: Soil was air dried and the five samples per site were pooled together. Ultrapure water was added and the samples agitated, centrifuged and filtered. Electrical conductivity was then measured using a probe and recorded in uS. Alpha diversity metrics: DNA was extracted from the soil using laboratory kits and sequenced by a third-party company (Novogene) using a paired-end Illumina platform, (NovaSeq 6000) using well established amplicon regions. The data was processed using QIIME2 to generate feature tables per sample. Taxonomy was assigned to the amplicons using Greengenes 2 (bacteria) and UNITE dynamic (Fungal). Shannon, Faith PD and chao1 were calculated from the QIIME2 feature tables and the assigned taxonomy. Functional metrics (bacteria): PicrusT2 was used to estimate Enzyme Commission numbers (EC), KEGG orthologs (KO) and MEtaCyc pathway predictions were calculated using default parameters using EPA-NG to place sequences into the required reference phylogeny. QIIME2 was then used to calculate Shannon entropy and Chao1 from the pathway abundance feature tables from PicrusT2. Functional metrics (fungi): Funguild was used to estimate guild associations per sample. QIIME2 was then used to calculate Shannon entropy and Chao1 from the guild tables. Former land-use is categorical with 4 levels: Industrial (n=30), Agricultural (n=30), Ancient Woodland (n=4) and Rewilding (n=2).\nQuality control/assessment applied to the data Data was collected in the field using pre-prepared data sheets. Data sheets were checked both visually before digital data entry, and any suspected errors were checked with raw field data sheets.  Extracted DNA was quantified on Nanodrop spectrophotometer to measure ng/μl, 260/280, and 260/230 ratios before being sent for sequencing. The sequencing company (Novogene) provided their own quality control before and after sequencing and any that failed were re-extracted and re-sequenced. The received sequenced reads were examined using FAST-QC and MULTI-QC and trimmed accordingly with cut adapt. The reads were then quality filtered and processed using DADA2. Rarefactions plots were generated to examine feature counts to ensure feature tables were of expected quality.\nLimitations on the data's reliability.  Amplicon sequencing is largely only accurate to genus level and taxonomy assignment is limited by database curation. Units are micro-M. Porewater was transferred from the collection syringe to an open syringe barrel containing an oxygen sensor via a 3-way valve. O2 concentrations were measured with a fast response microelectrode (50microm tip, Unisense). Readings from the microelectrode were displayed on a pico-ammeter (PA 2000; Unisense) and logged after 4s when the signal had stabilized. Calibration was performed with a zero solution (0.1M sodium ascorbate in 0.1M sodium hydroxide) and a solution of known O2 concentration (determined via Winkler titration). Through laboratory simulation with de-oxygenated water we estimate that O2 contamination during sample transfer and measurement was 10micro-M and have subtracted this value from the data. The limit of detection was 10micro-M and the precision was 2%.\n\nO2adj percent: Saturation of dissolved oxygen expressed relative to air-equilibrated water at the temperature of the sample. The air-equilibrated O2 concentration was calculated for each sample using the Bunsen solubility coefficient for O2 and the temperature of the sample (determined during pH measurement, see below). O2 sat = 100 x O2adj (see above) divided by the air-equilibrated O2 concentration.\n\npH of porewater sample prior to 15N injection. After the O2 concentration of the porewater was measured (see above) a calibrated pH probe (VWR 100) was placed in the solution and the temperature and pH was recorded.\n\nTemperature units are degrees centigrade.\n\nWater samples for nutrients were filtered through 0.45 micron filters (polypropylene). Samples for nutrient analysis were frozen at -20ºC before analysis.\nIn the permeable sandy sediments, nitrate reduction was measured by 'push-pull' using techniques in Lansdown et al. (2014). In the main piezometer network described in Shelley et al (2017), a tracer containing 15N-labelled nitrate (300 micro-M (M), 98 atom percent 15N) in a de-oxygenated synthetic river water plus KCl matrix was injected into the riverbed and porewater samples recovered over time (Lansdown et al. (2014)). A helium headspace was added to the water samples, the 15N-labelled N2 content was determined by mass spectrometry.\n\nData marked as 0 were below the detection limit of the method.
