Capabilities
The UKCEH researcher-operated boat fleet comprises: (1) John Lund (10m) - based on Lake Windermere; (2) Seahog Commodore - based at Loch Leven; (3) Six inflatable boats (mobile, can be transported between sites); (4) Four aluminium hulled boats (mobile, can be transported between sites); (5) One RIB (mobile, on a trailer, can be transported between sites).
Lifecycle
UKCEH has operated a research boat fleet for decades; the fleet's capacity and capability has developed over time to meet changing research needs. Individual boats typically have an expected lifespan of 10-15 years if serviced and repaired annually, although the lifespan of inflatable boats may be shorter.
Uniqueness
UKCEH boats are a standard and necessary research tool, based at UKCEH's flagship long-term monitoring sites.
Access
UKCEH boats are available for research users, either independently (if trained and insured) or with UKCEH boat-handlers. Requests for boat access should be directed to Linda May (UKCEH Edinburgh) or Steve Thackeray (UKCEH Lancaster).

Funding sources
Operation of UKCEH researcher-operated boats is funded by: NERC National Capability LTSS UK-SCaPE programme; and research project grants.
Users

These manually operated research boats are used by: UKCEH staff and students at Lancaster and Edinburgh; plus project partners and external users (when available).
