FOREGS-EuroGeoSurveys Geochemical Baseline Data and Maps

Environmental geochemical baseline data for Europe. The data include the concentration of over 60 determinands in a range of sampling media.

Determinands include: Ag, Al/Al2O3, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca/CaO, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Dy, Er, Eu, Fe/Fe2O3, Ga, Gd, Ge, Hf, Hg, Ho, I, In, Li, Lu, Mg/MgO, Mn/MnO, Mo, Na/Na2O, Nb, Nd, Ni, P2O5, Pb, pH, Pr, Rb, S, Sb, Sc, Se, SiO2, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ta, Tb, Te, Th, Ti/TiO2, Tl, Tm, U, V, W, Y, Yb, Zn, Zr, EC, HCO-3, Br-, Cl-, F-, NO-3, SO4-2, DOC, TOC.

Sampling media include: stream water; stream, overbank and floodplain sediment , residual soil and humus.

A summary of all elements and other determinands in the Atlas for each sample media, including the method and laboratory responsible for analysis and the limits of detection is included in Table 3 of the analytical manual (Sandström, H. et al. Sample Preparation and Analysis. in: http://weppi.gtk.fi/publ/foregsatlas/article.php?id=3).

Provenance & quality

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) coordinated the sampling (Salminen, R. et al. Sampling in: http://weppi.gtk.fi/publ/foregsatlas/article.php?id=10). The analysis was carried out in nine laboratories from participating Geological Surveys. In order to ensure the homogeneity of the data and to avoid any bias between laboratories or analytical methods, each laboratory was nominated to take responsibility for carrying out analysis by a particular analytical technique or techniques on all samples of a certain type. Analytical work was carried out from 1999 to 2003. All applied methods are described in detail in the analytical manual (Sandström, H. et al. Sample Preparation and Analysis. in: http://weppi.gtk.fi/publ/foregsatlas/article.php?id=3). Chemical analysis of the samples was completed in 2004, and data subsequently collated and examined for error by the Geological Survey of Finland.
