Details about the trees, ground flora, soil, habitat types as well as general plot information were collected for each plot using standardised procedures and coding systems.  Additionally, regeneration data were collected from each site.  In all, 7 woods from throughout Scotland were identified for survey; these were a subset of 27 pinewoods surveyed previously using similar methods, in 1971.
