Soils from the Bunce Woodland Survey (UK)

Air-dried and sieved topsoil samples taken in 1971, 2000-2003 and 2020-2023 as part of the Bunce Woodland Survey monitoring programme of Great Britain. Taken from a depth of 15 cm, using a black plastic cylinder corer or trowel. Samples originally taken by the Nature Conservancy, and later by UKCEH to analyse soil pH and Loss on Ignition.

Lineage
Collected in 15 cm long x 4 cm wide plastic pipes (or using trowel in difficult soils) from sites across Britain in the summers of 1971, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2020, 2021 and 2022 by trained, professional surveyors using defined protocols. Sieved and dried in the laboratories at UKCEH Merlewood/Lancaster. Stored in air dried state since collection. Vegetation and tree data from sampling sites are also available.
