These samples and the resulting datasets consists of count data for all species of spider and ground beetle (Carabidae) collected from three habitats (mire, dwarf-shrub heath, pine woodland) at the Cairngorms Environmental Change Network (ECN) since 1999 (beetles) and 2004 (spiders). Data was collected to look at long-term trends in invertebrate ground predators as part of ECN monitoring (www.ecn.ac.uk).

Beetles samples are not stored by species, but by habitat/trap/collection date. Spiders are aggregated by habitat and collection date. Entire samples cannot be removed from the collection, but could be made accessible for research purposes through request with the publishing author.

Samples are stored in glass vials using a preservative mixture of 70% IMS, 25% water and 5% glycerol. Beetles samples are not stored by species, but by habitat/trap/collection date. Spiders are aggregated by habitat and collection date.
Health & safety
Basic consideration required around COSHH safety procedure for the preservative, and can be made available on request.
Beetles and spiders were collected in pitfall traps on a two-weekly basis between March and early November. Each habitat contained 10 pitfall traps, spaced 10 m apart. For spiders, samples were aggregated by habitat and collection date prior to analysis. The number of male and females of each species was recorded by the same expert araneologist for the duration (2004-2021). Protocols for the invertebrate collection and monitoring can be downloaded from https://ecn.ac.uk/measurements/terrestrial/i.
