Event detection was generally achieved using manual assessment, but heather flowering showed a high degree of subjectivity, and so an automated pixel colour counting method was used to determine the peak flowering season.\n\nThis work was supported by the Natural Environment Research Council award number NE/R016429/1 as part of the UK-SCAPE programme delivering National Capability.","documentType":"GEMINI_DOCUMENT","familyName":["Andrews","Dick"],"fullName":["Andrews, C.","Dick, J."],"funder":["Natural Environment Research Council"],"givenName":["C.","J.","Christopher"],"grant":["NE/R016429/1"],"identifier":"8e30cead-700c-425c-841f-74c70659666a","incomingCitationCount":0,"keyword":["Cairngorms ECN site","Phenology","Spittlemass","Scots pine","Heather","snow"],"keywordsOther":["Phenology","Spittlemass","Scots pine","Heather","snow"],"keywordsPlace":["Cairngorms ECN site"],"keywordsTheme":["Phenology"],"licence":"Open government licence","lineage":"Where data were missed on the automatic repeat photography system due to obscuring weather or a system failure, secondary manual photographs taken during weekly site visits were used to provide bridging data of snow conditions. Phenological data could not be established on the earlier camera system due to image quality issues in the foreground. However, the change in camera had no impact on the detection of snow events pre- and post- upgrade, so the full time-series is useable.\n\nData was checked for obvious errors where values might have fallen outside of an expected range. The variables cover provisioning (food, fibre, fuel, genetic resources, biochemical and pharmaceuticals, ornamental), regulating (air quality regulation, climate regulation, water regulation, erosion, human diseases, biological control, pollination, natural hazard, other hazards) and cultural (cultural diversity) service types. The list of variables was agreed at an ECN site manager's workshop as representative of the high level categories defined by the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. The variables were calculated from data from three sources (i) data collected for the ECN to standard ECN protocols, (ii) data obtained by site managers from a variety of other sources for their site and (iii) expert knowledge of site managers. The data were from a single year (usually 2009) or were averages of annual measurements. Established in 1992, the ECN is the UK's long-term environmental monitoring and research programme and makes regular measurements of air, soil, water and a range of animals and plants across a network of sites to determine how and why the natural environment is changing. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (http://www.unep.org/maweb/en/Framework.aspx) was used as a recognised source of definitions and as a framework to identify goods and services for which variables or proxies were required. The 11 selected sites were examined to ensure representativeness of the wider landscape in respect to climate (rainfall and temperature), land cover and land management (through vegetation analysis). Prior to deposit of the data in the EIDC, data are managed by the ECN Data Centre at CEH Lancaster according to defined protocols. \n\nVerification steps include numeric range checks (i.e. checking if a value falls within a specified range), categorical checks (e.g. checking that a species code appears on the standard code list), formatting (i.e. that the dataset conforms to the specified data format) and logical integrity checks (i.e. checking the data make sense, e.g. that the dates in one dataset match those in a related dataset).\n\nAppropriate range settings for ECN variables have been selected following discussion with specialists in each field. Where data fall outside these ranges, a cautious approach has been adopted towards discarding data on the principle that apparent errors may be valid outliers. Such values are discarded only if there is a clear explanation (e.g. an instrumentation error) and corrections are made where possible. If the reason is unclear, the values are stored, but are qualified using pre-defined quality codes or free-text descriptions. Data providers also use these codes or free text to describe factors affecting sampling outside their control, instrument damage or site management effects.","locations":["POLYGON((-8.648 49.864, -8.648 60.861, 1.768 60.861, 1.768 49.864, -8.648 49.864))"],"metadataDate":"2026-05-11T18:03:41.000Z","orcid":["https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0027-0436","https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2428-272X","https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4180-9338"],"organisation":["Centre for Ecology & Hydrology","Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute","Rothamsted Research","The James Hutton Institute","Rothamsted Research, North Wyke","Forest Research","Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru - Natural Resources Wales","ADAS","Environmental Change Network","NERC Environmental Information Data Centre","NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology"],"publicationDate":"2018-01-09T00:00:00.000Z","recordType":"Dataset","resourceIdentifier":["https://catalogue.ceh.ac.uk/id/aff433be-0869-4393-b765-9e6faad2a12b","10.5285/aff433be-0869-4393-b765-9e6faad2a12b","doi:10.5285/aff433be-0869-4393-b765-9e6faad2a12b"],"resourceType":"Dataset","rightsHolder":["UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology"],"ror":["https://ror.org/00pggkr55","https://ror.org/05c5y5q11","https://ror.org/0347fy350","https://ror.org/03rzp5127","https://ror.org/03wcc3744","https://ror.org/04x65hs26","https://ror.org/006d11e04","https://ror.org/04xw4m193"],"shortenedDescription":"Spittle Bug data from the UK Environmental Change Network (ECN) terrestrial sites.
