For heterotrophic respiration, collars were inserted as deep as the thaw depth allowed and as deep as 40cm into the soil and vascular vegetation was clipped on the surface. To minimize the autotrophic component, the location of the collars for heterotrophic respiration was trenched the previous summer the measurements were taken (except for thawed peatlands where trenching was done the same summer). For autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration, collars were placed on the ground surface without being inserted in the soil. Chambers were used to enclose the collars and all CO2 fluxes were monitored using an EGM-4 Infrared Gas Analyser (PP
