The clones assayed were isolated from populations of R. leguminosarum which had been evolved in lab media for twenty 73hr 'transfers'. Clones were assessed for their resistance to the ancestral phages (reduction in bacterial growth), their ability to form symbioses (plant biomass, nitrogen content and nodule counts) and traits associated with colonisation (biofilm production, swimming and swarming motility and gelatinase activity).\nThis experiment tests the hypothesis that evolution for phage resistance will drive the loss of symbiosis functions in rhizobia due to antagonistic pleiotropy.","distributionFormats":[{"name":"Comma-separated values (CSV)","type":"text/csv","version":"unknown"}],"distributorContacts":[{"organisationName":"NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/04xw4m193","role":"distributor","email":"info@eidc.ac.uk"}],"funding":[{"funderName":"Natural Environment Research Council","funderIdentifier":"https://ror.org/02b5d8509","awardTitle":"Independant Research Fellowship","awardNumber":"NE/P017584/1","awardURI":"https://gotw.nerc.ac.uk/list_full.asp?pcode=NE%2FP017584%2F1","orcid":false,"ror":true},{"funderName":"Natural Environment Research Council","funderIdentifier":"https://ror.org/02b5d8509","awardTitle":"ACCE2 PhD scholarship","orcid":false,"ror":true}],"hasOnlineServiceAgreement":true,"id":"12f2f235-8e18-40c7-9113-acb85de9edd7","incomingCitationCount":0,"infoLinks":[{"url":"https://data-package.ceh.ac.uk/sd/12f2f235-8e18-40c7-9113-acb85de9edd7.zip","name":"Supporting information","description":"Supporting information available to assist in re-use of this dataset","function":"information","type":"OTHER"}],"keywordsOther":[{"value":"Bacteriophage"},{"value":"Rhizobia"},{"value":"Antagonistic coevolution"},{"value":"symbiosis","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/8259"}],"keywordsTheme":[{"value":"Evolutionary ecology","uri":"http://onto.nerc.ac.uk/CEHMD/topic/19"}],"licences":[{"value":"This resource is available under the terms of the Open Government Licence","code":"license","uri":"https://eidc.ac.uk/licences/OGL/plain"}],"lineage":"This dataset contains assay data from an evolution experiment assessing the impact of evolution with different lytic phages on the symbiotic performance of rhizobia. Briefly, strain Rhizobium leguminosarum TRX19 was evolved in lab media with 1 of 3 phages or in the absence of phage. Clones were isolated from evolved populations and screened for resistance, symbiotic function and phenotypes related to colonisation.\n\nMost of the data are raw values acquired from assays of the evolved clones. These include:\ngrowth with host plant - collecting plant biomass, nodule counts and nitrogen content via Isotope ratio mass spectrometry.\nPhenotypic analysis - biofilm production, swimming and swarming motility, growth rate in liquid broth and gelatinase assays\n\nPhage resistance data is presented as RBG - reduction in bacterial growth - generated as the ratio of the density (OD600) of cultures grown in a microtitre plate either with or without phages. The ratio of phage exposed to phage free bacterial growth indicates the severity of the infection.","metadataDate":"2026-06-29T16:19:39","notGEMINI":true,"onlineResources":[{"url":"https://data-package.ceh.ac.uk/data/12f2f235-8e18-40c7-9113-acb85de9edd7","name":"Download the data","description":"Download a copy of this data","function":"download","type":"OTHER"},{"url":"https://data-package.ceh.ac.uk/sd/12f2f235-8e18-40c7-9113-acb85de9edd7.zip","name":"Supporting information","description":"Supporting information available to assist in re-use of this dataset","function":"information","type":"OTHER"}],"pointsOfContact":[{"displayName":"Ellie Harrison","organisationName":"University of Sheffield","role":"pointOfContact","email":"ellie.harrison@sheffield.ac.uk","fullName":"Ellie Harrison","pointOfContact":"University of Sheffield"}],"publicationDate":"2026-03-04T00:00:00.000Z","publishers":[{"organisationName":"NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/04xw4m193","role":"publisher","email":"info@eidc.ac.uk"}],"resourceIdentifiers":[{"code":"https://catalogue.ceh.ac.uk/id/12f2f235-8e18-40c7-9113-acb85de9edd7"},{"code":"10.5285/12f2f235-8e18-40c7-9113-acb85de9edd7","codeSpace":"doi"}],"resourceType":{"value":"nonGeographicDataset"},"responsibleParties":[{"displayName":"Ellie Harrison","organisationName":"University of Sheffield","role":"pointOfContact","email":"ellie.harrison@sheffield.ac.uk","fullName":"Ellie Harrison","pointOfContact":"University of Sheffield"},{"honorificPrefix":"Dr","familyName":"Pain","givenName":"Charly","organisationName":"University of Sheffield","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/05krs5044","role":"author","email":"capain1@sheffield.ac.uk","fullName":"Pain, C."},{"honorificPrefix":"Dr","familyName":"Harrison","givenName":"E","organisationName":"University of Sheffield","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/05krs5044","role":"author","email":"ellie.harrison@sheffield.ac.uk","nameIdentifier":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2050-4631","fullName":"Harrison, E."},{"organisationName":"University of Sheffield","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/05krs5044","role":"rightsHolder"},{"organisationName":"NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/04xw4m193","role":"custodian","email":"info@eidc.ac.uk"},{"organisationName":"NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/04xw4m193","role":"publisher","email":"info@eidc.ac.uk"}],"rightsHolders":[{"organisationName":"University of Sheffield","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/05krs5044","role":"rightsHolder"}],"title":"Phenotypic traits of Rhizobium leguminosarum TRX19 clones evolved in the presence of different lytic bacteriophages","topicCategories":[{"value":"environment","uri":"http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/metadata-codelist/TopicCategory/environment"}],"topics":["http://onto.nerc.ac.uk/CEHMD/topic/19"],"type":"nonGeographicDataset","uri":"https://catalogue.ceh.ac.uk/id/12f2f235-8e18-40c7-9113-acb85de9edd7","useConstraints":[{"value":"This resource is available under the terms of the Open Government Licence","code":"license","uri":"https://eidc.ac.uk/licences/OGL/plain"}]}
