CEH Hydrology of Soil Types (HOST)
Download/Access
HOST is a hydrologically-based classification of the soils of the UK. 29 soil classes are grouped by hydrological properties, particularly their ability to transmit water both vertically and horizontally. The dominant HOST class and a percentage breakdown by HOST classes are available for each 1km square, with no further information on spatial distribution. The area of lake or reservoir is also held. HOST is used to estimate the Baseflow Index (BFI) and standard percentage runoff, from which low flow and flood statistics can be generated for ungauged catchments.

Provenance & quality
HOST classification is based on conceptual models of the flow pathways and storage within the soil and, where appropriate, substrate. The classification has been applied to the 1:250,000 reconnaissance soil maps published by the UK's soil survey organisations during the 1980s to produce a 1 km gridded dataset. See Online Resources for further information.
