Faecal indicators were quantified based on standard dilution, membrane filtration and incubation, followed by colony counting.\n\nThe data were collected to investigate the fine scale connectivity between Faecal Indicator Organisms (FIO) densities within water bodies and diffuse and point source inputs from the adjacent catchment and from biological vectors. They also provide an indication of the relative sources of variation in reported concentrations that is relevant for environmental regulatory purposes.\n\nThe work was supported by the Natural Environment Research Council grant NE/N006437/1 (Hydroscape: connectivity x stressor interactions in freshwater habitats).","distributionFormats":[{"name":"Comma-separated values (CSV)","type":"text/csv","version":"unknown"}],"distributorContacts":[{"organisationName":"NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/04xw4m193","role":"distributor","email":"info@eidc.ac.uk"}],"funding":[{"funderName":"Natural Environment Research Council","funderIdentifier":"https://ror.org/02b5d8509","awardTitle":"Hydroscape:connectivity x stressor interactions in freshwater habitats","awardNumber":"NE/N006437/1","awardURI":"https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=NE%2FN006437%2F1","orcid":false,"ror":true}],"id":"5f988cd4-479d-4e35-8835-42f80ebc1698","incomingCitationCount":0,"infoLinks":[{"url":"https://data-package.ceh.ac.uk/sd/5f988cd4-479d-4e35-8835-42f80ebc1698.zip","name":"Supporting information","description":"Supporting information available to assist in re-use of this dataset","function":"information","type":"OTHER"}],"inspireThemes":[{"theme":"Environmental Monitoring Facilities","uri":"http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/theme/ef"}],"keywordsOther":[{"value":"Connectivity"},{"value":"spatial variation"},{"value":"faecal indicators"},{"value":"Human health"},{"value":"microbiology","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/5218"},{"value":"water quality","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/9214"},{"value":"human health","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/4051"},{"value":"Rural-urban"}],"keywordsTheme":[{"value":"Water quality","uri":"http://onto.nerc.ac.uk/CEHMD/topic/16"}],"licences":[{"value":"This resource is available under the terms of the Open Government Licence","code":"license","uri":"https://eidc.ac.uk/licences/ogl/plain"}],"lineage":"Sub-surface water samples obtained from multiple discrete points within 18 water bodies in each of three lake districts via wading and shore-based sampling.\n\nStandard water body characteristics (area, elevation, perimeter etc) are available from the UK Lakes Portal (https://uklakes.ceh.ac.uk/).\n\nWater samples for microbial analysis were stored at 4 degrees C and processed within six hours of collection. 100ml samples at three dilutions were filtered through 0.45-um membrane filters, placed onto the surface of Membrane Lactose Glucoronide Agar (MLGA agar). Plates were incubated at 37 degrees C and counted after 24 hours. Counts are reported as number of Colony Forming Units (CFU) per 100 ml water.\n\nData limitations: spatial sampling points within each water body were established with a handheld GPS with typical accuracy of +/- 3-5m. Concentrations of Faecal Indicator Organisms (FIOs), especially in water, are highly spatially and temporally variable over short distances and time scales. The data therefore provide a near instantaneous picture of the spatial variation in FIO concentrations within a water body at a given time. The data are suitable for an assessment of relative sources of variation in FIO concentrations (i.e. within sample location, between sample location, between site, between district and between season).\n\nData were added to an Excel spreadsheet and exported as .csv files for deposit into the EIDC.","metadataDate":"2026-06-29T17:02:14","notGEMINI":false,"onlineResources":[{"url":"https://data-package.ceh.ac.uk/data/5f988cd4-479d-4e35-8835-42f80ebc1698","name":"Download the data","description":"Download a copy of this data","function":"download","type":"OTHER"},{"url":"https://data-package.ceh.ac.uk/sd/5f988cd4-479d-4e35-8835-42f80ebc1698.zip","name":"Supporting information","description":"Supporting information available to assist in re-use of this dataset","function":"information","type":"OTHER"}],"pointsOfContact":[{"familyName":"Willby","givenName":"N.J.","organisationName":"University of Stirling","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/045wgfr59","role":"pointOfContact","email":"n.j.willby@stir.ac.uk","nameIdentifier":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1020-0933","fullName":"Willby, N.J.","pointOfContact":"University of Stirling"}],"publicationDate":"2023-05-24T00:00:00.000Z","publishers":[{"organisationName":"NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/04xw4m193","role":"publisher","email":"info@eidc.ac.uk"}],"relationships":[{"relation":"http://purl.org/dc/terms/isPartOf","target":"f93fa91a-bb42-4efb-b0d9-e7441fdc8d63"}],"resourceIdentifiers":[{"code":"https://catalogue.ceh.ac.uk/id/5f988cd4-479d-4e35-8835-42f80ebc1698"},{"code":"10.5285/5f988cd4-479d-4e35-8835-42f80ebc1698","codeSpace":"doi"}],"resourceMaintenance":[{"frequencyOfUpdate":"notPlanned"}],"resourceType":{"value":"dataset"},"responsibleParties":[{"organisationName":"NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/04xw4m193","role":"custodian","email":"info@eidc.ac.uk"},{"organisationName":"NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/04xw4m193","role":"publisher","email":"info@eidc.ac.uk"},{"familyName":"Pattison","givenName":"Z.","organisationName":"University of Newcastle","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/01kj2bm70","role":"author","email":"Zarah.pattison@newcastle.ac.uk","nameIdentifier":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5243-0876","fullName":"Pattison, Z."},{"familyName":"Quilliam","givenName":"R.S.","organisationName":"University of Stirling","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/045wgfr59","role":"author","email":"richard.quilliam@stir.ac.uk","nameIdentifier":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7020-4410","fullName":"Quilliam, R.S."},{"familyName":"Oliver","givenName":"D.","organisationName":"University of Stirling","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/045wgfr59","role":"author","email":"david.oliver@stir.ac.uk","nameIdentifier":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6200-562X","fullName":"Oliver, D."},{"familyName":"Willby","givenName":"N.J.","organisationName":"University of Stirling","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/045wgfr59","role":"author","email":"n.j.willby@stir.ac.uk","nameIdentifier":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1020-0933","fullName":"Willby, N.J."},{"familyName":"Willby","givenName":"N.J.","organisationName":"University of Stirling","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/045wgfr59","role":"pointOfContact","email":"n.j.willby@stir.ac.uk","nameIdentifier":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1020-0933","fullName":"Willby, N.J.","pointOfContact":"University of Stirling"},{"organisationName":"University of Stirling","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/045wgfr59","role":"rightsHolder","email":"n.j.willby@stir.ac.uk"}],"rightsHolders":[{"organisationName":"University of Stirling","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/045wgfr59","role":"rightsHolder","email":"n.j.willby@stir.ac.uk"}],"spatialReferenceSystems":[{"code":"https://data.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/datasets/opennames","title":"GB place names"}],"spatialRepresentationTypes":["textTable"],"spatialResolutions":[{"distance":"5","uom":"urn:ogc:def:uom:EPSG::9001"}],"supplemental":[{"name":"Lakes portal","url":"https://uklakes.ceh.ac.uk/","function":"website"}],"temporalExtents":[{"begin":"2016-06-01","end":"2017-11-30"}],"title":"Faecal indicator data from 54 lakes in Greater Glasgow, Cumbria, and Norfolk, UK, 2016-2017","topicCategories":[{"value":"environment","uri":"http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/metadata-codelist/TopicCategory/environment"},{"value":"health","uri":"http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/metadata-codelist/TopicCategory/health"}],"topics":["http://onto.nerc.ac.uk/CEHMD/topic/16"],"type":"dataset","uri":"https://catalogue.ceh.ac.uk/id/5f988cd4-479d-4e35-8835-42f80ebc1698","useConstraints":[{"value":"This resource is available under the terms of the Open Government Licence","code":"license","uri":"https://eidc.ac.uk/licences/ogl/plain"}]}
