This dataset contains the period rain gauge data from a very dense network of 39 sites in the Plynlimon (Pumlumon) area of upland mid-Wales, representing the headwaters of the Rivers Severn (Hafren) and Wye (Gwy).

A specially designed network of ground level and canopy storage rain gauges across 39 sites delivered rainfall data from 1971 to 2010 to explore changing hydrometeorology as part of the long-term Plynlimon catchment monitoring study.

An additional 19 period rain gauges were also installed for various periods between 1971 and 2010 and are included in this dataset.

Provenance & quality

Precipitation data recorded from storage gauges and manually read. Data were removed for various reasons including snowfall and vandalism and have been iteratively in-filled from a combination of gauge and monthly averages.
