They were separated into distinguishable sections, and then walked and surveyed 2m either side of the surveyor for flowers. The flower species seen were identified and their estimated abundances recorded. Wildflower identification books were used to reach an accurate species-level identification where possible for each flower species seen. A “flower” was counted when fully open, and is defined as either a single flower, flowers on an umbel or spike, or a capitulum.
