Bulk density was determined by subsampling the peat gently to fill a 20 ml volumetric syringe. Inorganic geochemistry was measured using a Spectro XEPOS 3 Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser with daily standardisation checks against 18 certified reference materials. Total carbon and total nitrogen was measured via combustion on a Thermo Scientific Flash Smart Organic Elemental Analyser, using a two-point daily calibration. FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) and NIRS (Near-Infrared) spectroscopy used a Bruker Alpha 2 diamond crystal Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (ATR-FTIR) and a Bruker MPA spectrometer, respectively."
