{"access":"The UKCEH Engineering Workshops Service is accessible to UKCEH and collaborating researchers.  From 2022 potential users will be able to enquire via the UKCEH website, meanwhile contact Simon Teagle, Technical Project Manager, simtea@ceh.ac.uk","capabilities":"The UKCEH Engineering Workshops Service employs expert design engineers and craftpersons, with additional capacity to contract-out, for example to PCB manufacturers, 3D printing houses, stainless steel fabricators and many more.  The service includes: translation of scientific requirements into engineering designs with professional drawings and documentation which sub-contractors can work to; innovating; maintaining and improving quality; value for money; managing Health & Safety (designing to reduce risks); and reducing the environmental impact of these activities (e.g. phasing out more harmful raw materials).  In-house equipment capabilities include: CNC lathes and mills with other machining capabilities; welding bay; woodworking shop; etc. to manufacture precision engineered electro-mechanical components, sub-assemblies and complete instrument systems; plus all manner of experimental apparatus, including large field infrastructure: to design, build, install, commission, operate/maintain, and decommission (leaving no trace) - complete project cycle management.","description":"The purposes of the UKCEH Engineering Workshops Service are: \n(1) To design and prototype new scientific equipment not commercially available; \n(2) Small batch production of specialist scientific equipment for (a) UKCEH researchers and (b) commercial sales of equipment (e.g. Delta Air Quality samplers).","fundingSources":"Funding for the UKCEH Engineering Workshops Service comes from users including: UKRI-NERC National Capability awards (UK-SCAPE, ASSIST, Institutional Funding); research project grants; UKCEH Innovation Funding; external customer equipment purchases and rentals; external customers.","id":"a82a8cf9-0305-4acc-8db3-38214be65688","infrastructureCategory":{"value":"labsTest","description":"Test labs","infrastructureClass":"Analytical facilities","uri":"http://vocabs.ceh.ac.uk/ri/labsTest"},"infrastructureChallenge":[{"value":"Climate change: mitigation"},{"value":"Climate change: adaptation"},{"value":"Pollution","uri":"http://vocab.ceh.ac.uk/ri#Pollution"},{"value":"Sustainable ecosystems: biodiversity net gain"}],"lifecycle":"The UKCEH Engineering Workshops Service has been operating for more than 50 years.","locationText":"The Engineering Workshops Service is located primarily at UKCEH Wallingford, with additional workshops at UKCEH Bangor and Edinburgh stations.","metadataDate":"2025-04-09T09:24:27","owners":[{"displayName":"Simon Teagle","organisationName":"UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/00pggkr55","role":"owner","fullName":"Simon Teagle"}],"partners":"No external partners help to operate the UKCEH Engineering Workshops Service, though some work is contracted out to commercial engineering service providers.","resourceIdentifiers":[{"code":"https://catalogue-staging.ceh.ac.uk/id/e6dd9e94-5008-4da1-ac64-464a8f65697f"},{"code":"https://catalogue.ceh.ac.uk/id/a82a8cf9-0305-4acc-8db3-38214be65688"}],"scienceArea":"Hydro-climate Risks","title":"UKCEH Engineering Workshops Service","type":"infrastructureRecord","uniqueness":"The UKCEH Engineering Workshops Service has developed unique experience and capabilities in supporting environmental research in the lab and field, including but not limited to: hydro-meteorology; water quality; biodiversity; pollution; greenhouse gas monitoring.","uri":"https://catalogue.ceh.ac.uk/id/a82a8cf9-0305-4acc-8db3-38214be65688","users":["Users of the Engineeering Workshops Service include: (1) UKCEH scientists; and (2) external customers such as: Environment Agency , HR Wallingford; British Geological Survey; Universities etc."]}
