Trees were identified at species level (where possible) by expert botanists and unidentified species were sorted into morphospecies.\n\n To assure high quality of element concentrations we included certified reference materials and each sample was measured three times. We also ensured that the measured values fit within those of calibration standards and, if necessary, re-analysed samples diluted to fall within the calibration range.
