Additionally, the air temperature and barometric pressure were recorded in each study site between the first and second sampling hour using a thermo-hygro-barometer (Comet, C4130, Sequoia Sensors). Five composite soil samples (0-10 cm) were collected with a hand auger from each study site after the end of the gas flux measurements within 50 cm of each plot. The samples were transported to the laboratory on ice and stored at 4 oC overnight. The next day visible stones and roots were removed manually and the soils were homogenized by manual mixing before laboratory analysis. The collars were moved to new random plots within each study site every three months to minimize any effects on greenhouse gas fluxes from repeated tracer application in the same plots.
