The fish were then used in a quantitative trait loci (QTL) experiment to determine the genomic regions associated with various phenotypic traits in the fish. Fish were euthanised using an overdose of anaesthetic (MS222). Each fish was blotted to remove excess water, photographed using a Nikon digital SLR camera, weighed to the nearest milligram using a fine balance, and fish length was measured (from the tip of the snout to the tip of the caudal peduncle) to the nearest millimetre using handheld callipers.
