Samples were freeze dried and weighted to calculate bulk density. Values of bulk density are expressed in grams of dry soil per cm3 of wet soil. For carbon and nitrogen content, a ground sample was weighted and combusted in a C and N analyser. Standards were analysed in each run and a batch specific calibration was used to calculate the carbon and nitrogen content of the samples. Values of carbon and nitrogen content are expressed as percentage of dry soil
