The tree species studied were Acer pseudoplatanus (sycamore), Castanea sativa (sweet chestnut), Fagus sylvatica (beech), Fraxinus excelsior (common ash), Quercus cerris (Turkey oak), Q. petraea (sessile oak), Q. robur (pedunculate oak), Q. rubra (red oak) and Tilia x europaea (common lime). \n\nThe presence of all lichens and bryophyte species on the trunk to a height of 1.75m were recorded in addition to the presence of the lichens on branches and twigs where these were accessible. The bark characteristics recorded were bark pH, ridge and furrow width, furrow depth, hardness, water holding capacity and the bark patterning. The soil variables studied were: nitrogen mineralization and decomposition rate, total soil carbon and nitrogen, loss on ignition, soil pH and soil temperature. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy data from the soil samples is also presented along with data on site location and the habitat characteristics surrounding the sampled trees.","distributionFormats":[{"name":"Comma-separated values (CSV)","type":"text/csv","version":"unknown"}],"distributorContacts":[{"organisationName":"NERC EDS Environmental Information Data Centre","organisationIdentifier":"https://ror.org/04xw4m193","role":"distributor","email":"info@eidc.ac.uk"}],"funding":[{"funderName":"Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council","funderIdentifier":"https://ror.org/00cwqg982","awardTitle":"PuRpOsE: PRotecting Oak Ecosystems: understanding and forecasting causes and consequences, management for future climates","awardNumber":"BB/N022831/1","awardURI":"https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=BB/N022831/1","orcid":false,"ror":true}],"id":"f539567f-a8cd-482e-89b8-64a951b52d93","incomingCitationCount":0,"infoLinks":[{"url":"https://data-package.ceh.ac.uk/sd/f539567f-a8cd-482e-89b8-64a951b52d93.zip","name":"Supporting information","description":"Supporting information available to assist in re-use of this dataset","function":"information","eidcDistribution":false,"type":"OTHER"}],"inspireThemes":[{"theme":"Environmental Monitoring Facilities","uri":"http://inspire.ec.europa.eu/theme/ef"}],"keywordsOther":[{"value":"Acer pseudoplatanus","uri":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q156944"},{"value":"Castanea sativa","uri":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q22699"},{"value":"Fagus sylvatica","uri":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q146149"},{"value":"Fraxinus excelsior","uri":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q156907"},{"value":"Quercus robur","uri":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q165145"},{"value":"Quercus cerris","uri":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q157277"},{"value":"Quercus petraea","uri":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q158608"},{"value":"Quercus rubra","uri":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q147525"},{"value":"Tilia x europaea","uri":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q127849"},{"value":"bark characteristics"},{"value":"beech"},{"value":"common lime"},{"value":"common ash"},{"value":"ecological functions"},{"value":"pedunculate oak"},{"value":"red oak"},{"value":"Turkey oak"},{"value":"sycamore"},{"value":"sweet chestnut"},{"value":"sessile oak"},{"value":"lichen","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/4799"},{"value":"ecosystem services","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/15138"},{"value":"bryophyte","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/1023"},{"value":"carbon sequestration","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/15091"},{"value":"nutrient cycle","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/5759"},{"value":"decomposition","uri":"http://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/concept/2014"}],"keywordsTheme":[{"value":"Biodiversity","uri":"http://onto.nerc.ac.uk/CEHMD/topic/2"}],"licences":[{"value":"This resource is available under the terms of the Open Government Licence","code":"license","uri":"https://eidc.ac.uk/licences/ogl/plain"}],"lineage":"Lichen and bryophyte data were collected in the field.
