Sampling was conducted in an area invaded by Urochloa brizantha, where invaded and non-invaded patches were paired, totaling 10 patches with 2 plots each. The study site is located within the Estação Ecológica de Itirapina, a natural reserve in southeastern Brazil, spanning the municipalities of Brotas and Itirapina, São Paulo State. Belowground biomass was sampled from the same plots to 30 cm depth, and organs were washed, classified by type, and live buds counted under a stereomicroscope. Roots and soil samples were collected with a 5 cm auger every 10 cm down to 1 m depth. Soil samples were analysed at ESALQ/USP for chemical fertility and total C and N.\nBiomass samples were oven-dried (80  degrees) to constant weight and expressed in g/m2. Bud density was expressed as buds/m2. Soil C and N stocks were derived from bulk density and concentration data.
