Plynlimon Hydrochemistry data

This dataset includes rainfall, cloud and stream hydrochemistry of the Plynlimon research catchments in Mid Wales. The data cover the period from May 1983 to March 2016. Sampling was weekly from May 1988 to December 2011 and then fortnightly from January 2012. Data from May 1988 to June 2011 are presented in Plynlimon research catchment hydrochemistry (44095e17-43b0-45d4-a781-aab4f72da025). Data from June 2011 to March 2016 are presented in Plynlimon research catchment hydrochemistry (2011-2016) (794c609b-da62-4a42-a4c1-267219865bb1). Data for the whole period are presented for major anions and cations, pH, conductivity, alkalinity and in-situ measurements such as water temperature and streamflow. From May 1988 to March 2013 data are also presented for a range of metals.
Stream samples were taken using a grab technique. Rain samples were collected using bulk precipitation collectors. Cloud samples were collected using a Centre of Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) Edinburgh pattern lidded harp type passive collector.
Fieldwork was carried out by CEH members of staff trained in the fieldwork techniques required. Chemical analysis was carried out by qualified CEH chemists at laboratories at CEH Lancaster and CEH Bangor
The Plynlimon research catchments lie within the headwaters of the River Severn and the River Wye in the uplands of mid-Wales. Intensive and long-term monitoring within the catchments underpins a wealth of long term hydrological and hydro-chemical research. Monitoring is funded by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and is ongoing since 1968.

Provenance & quality

Sampling was carried out weekly from May 1983 to December 2011 and then fortnightly from January 2012. Stream samples were taken using a grab technique. Rain samples were collected using bulk precipitation collectors. Cloud samples were collected using a Centre of Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) Edinburgh pattern lidded harp type passive collector. From 1988 to 1999 water sampling was carried out by members of staff from the Institute of Hydrology based at Dolydd near the Plynlimon catchments. From 1999 sampling has been carried out from CEH Bangor. The laboratory analysis has been undertaken at different locations using different equipment during the years of monitoring represented within the datasets. Details of the analytical methods used for each determinand are included within the supporting information of the datasets. For the dataset Plynlimon research catchment hydrochemistry 44095e17-43b0-45d4-a781-aab4f72da025 data was collated from Excel spreadsheets held at CEH Wallingford added to an Access database maintained at CEH Bangor. For ingestion into the Environmental Information data was extracted from the Access database and converted into a comma separated value file. For the data presented in Plynlimon research catchment hydrochemistry (2011-2016) 794c609b-da62-4a42-a4c1-267219865bb1 results were reported back from the laboratories at CEH Lancaster to CEH Bangor as Excel spreadsheets. These data were then imported into an Access database.pH, conductivity and alkalinity analysis was carried out the CEH Bangor laboratories. Results were reported back as Excel spreadsheets. Field measurements and flow calculations were also added to these Excel spreadsheets. These data were then imported into the same Access database as the CEH Lancaster results. For ingestion into the Environmental Information data was extracted from the Access database and converted into a comma separated value file.
