This dataset contains the output of a national-scale prioritisation exercise aimed at determining the risks posed by 30,310 legacy waste sites and historical landfill sites to the coastal environment of England and Wales. The analysis was repeated under three future coastal change scenarios (short-, medium-, and long-term), and is sortable based on the overall risk score for each climate scenario.

Provenance & quality

A combination of publicly available and proprietary shapefiles of waste deposits were analysed using GIS methods. Output data were then fed into a prioritisation method based on source-pathway-receptor models. A suite of spatial data has been integrated in order to score potential risks associated with waste type (Source), likelihood of pollutant release relating to current and future flood and erosion climate projections, alongside current management infrastructure (Pathway), and proximity to sensitive ecological features or proxies of human use in coastal areas (Receptors).
