The dataset contains occupancy estimates for 1,535 species of six invertebrate taxa (Apoidea - bees, Syrphidae - hoverflies, Coccinellidae - ladybirds, Arachnida - spiders, Carabidae - carabids and Heteroptera - plant bugs) in regions of high, low and no cropland cover in Great Britain between 1990 and 2019. Occupancy is the proportion of 1km grid cells occupied by a species, as estimated by an occupancy-detection model. The dataset includes 999 samples from the model’s posterior distribution per species:year combination and for each of three regions of high, low and no cropland cover.

Provenance & quality

The dataset was generated using observations of species collated by UK recording schemes and societies as the input data for a Bayesian occupancy-detection model. The cropland cover regions were defined using the Land Cover Change 1990-2015 (25m raster, GB). The input species data was standardized according to the requirements of the model and to desired coverage. Observations of species had to meet the following criteria to be included in the final input dataset:
- Date of the record known to the day
- Location of the record known to 1x1km square precision
- Record was from 1990 onwards
- The location of the record was in GB (strictly England, Scotland and Wales)

Species names were checked with guidance from the scheme organisers, duplicate records were then removed from the dataset. The occupancy modelling framework used here was based on the random walk model. Alterations made to the modelling framework include cropland cover region year effects in the state model and a categorical specification of list length in the detection model. For a complete description of the model, see the supporting documentation.
