This dataset contains measurements of greenhouse gas exchange (carbon dioxide and methane) over a near natural blanket bog in the Flow Country, Caithness and Sutherland, using eddy-covariance, and associated meteorological and pedological measurements from 2016-10-19 to 2022-12-31 at half hourly intervals. The time series has been gap filled to allow the calculation of annual budgets for carbon exchange.

Provenance & quality

The site was first installed in April 2008 by Pete Levy, UKCEH, with funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme project ‘Greenhouse gas management in European land-use systems’ and its operation has been maintained since then under other grants and projects. It is currently managed by the James Hutton Institute (Aberdeen) as part of the SCO2FLUX network with supporting funding from NERC (Mothership Project) and SRES (CentrePeat project). UKCEH continues to assist with supplying instrumentation for the site and analysis/interpretation of the data, while University of the Highlands and Islands are the local site operators with support from the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds).

Measurements are made using standard instrumentation, retrieved remotely at regular intervals and processed using protocols similar to those defined by the FluxNet and ICOS projects.
