Data comprise concentrations of Perfluorinated compounds in the eggs of the marine sentinel species the Northern gannet (Morus bassanus), from colonies in Ailsa Craig in the Irish Sea (eastern Atlantic), and Bass Rock in the North Sea, United Kingdom. The study reports concentrations of eight perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and three perfluorinated sulfonates (PFSs), for 1977-2014. The data is part of the Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme (PBMS).

Provenance & quality

Fresh eggs are collected by licensed egg collectors and are sent to the Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme (PBMS) at UKCEH Lancaster. The contents of the eggs are sampled and are 1) analysed by the UKCEH Centralised Analytical Chemistry and 2) retained for archive purposes. The biometric data (whole egg weight, length and breadth, etc) are recorded on a MSAccess form which uploads directly to an Oracle database. Chemistry batch files containing concentrations of the different contaminants in tissues and eggs are loaded directly into an Oracle database.
