This dataset includes measured DOC concentration, and modelled DOC concentration derived from UV-visible absorbance spectra. We also include measured chlorophyll concentration, pH and conductivity. The natural water samples were collected from freshwater ecosystems in the UK, and site names and locations. Samples were also collected at set intervals throughout the year, from mesocosm experiments simulating natural lake ecosystems. Data on measured and modelled DOC concentration, chlorophyll concentration, pH and conductivity for the mesocosms sampled, are also included.

Provenance & quality

We collected surface water samples representative of different states of eutrophication (defined by concentration of chlorophyll a [Chl-a]) and DOM sources, from catchments in the north of England during summer and autumn 2014 and 2015. Additionally, we collected samples from 4 mesocosm experiments from the CEH aquatic mesocosm facility (CAMF; http://www.ceh.ac.uk/our-science/research-facility/aquatic-mesocosm-facility). The four mesocosms represented a range of treatments, including heating and nutrient addition. Identification of the dominant algal classes was conducted, which included Chlorophyceae and Cyanophyceae, with a bloom of Euglena in mesocosm 7 in the early summer. For our analyses, a 500 mL sample was collected from the 4 mesocosms, and 1L samples from the natural study sites, in pre-rinsed vessels.
