The data are derived from Alnus glutinosa plants grown in intact soil cores collected from beneath three co-occurring tree species. The data describe plant above and below ground biomass, coarse and fine root biomass, colonisation of roots by Frankia and ectomycorrhizal fungi, ecosystem carbon fluxes, capture of 13C from a pulse labelling process, 15N content of leaves, and soil nutrients.

Provenance & quality

Plants were transplanted into cores and grown in a controlled environmental facility. Soil nutrient data was collected from the cores using a combination of ion-exchange probes and acid digestion. A pulse labelling procedure was undertaken to provide 13CO2 to plants, and 3 days later the cores were dismantled and harvested. Analytical facilities were checked for quality control against known standards, and the entire dataset collated and scrutinised for outliers and unusual values.
