This dataset contains acceleration data measured from low-cost and open-source bottom-mounted floats called 'Mini Buoys', to identify hydrological tipping points between expanding and eroding mangrove edges of Lothian Island in the Indian Ganges Brahmaputra Meghna Delta from 15-12-2021 to 08-01-2022. Both the East and West portions of the island were measured. The purpose of the survey was to determine the hydrological forcing around the island - where mangrove stability transitions from expanding to eroding.

Provenance & quality

Data to assess the hydrological tipping point between expanding and eroding mangrove edges was gathered at western (21°38′53″N, 088°18′45″E) and eastern (21°40′05″N, 088°20′44″E) Lothian island, Indian GBM delta. B4+ Mini Buoys were deployed along seaward mangrove edges where there was a transition from expansion to erosion. Each logger sampled y-axis acceleration at 1 Hz. Coordinates showing the location of each Mini Buoy deployment are expressed in WGS84 standard. No processing was done to acceleration data.

Data are provided in two folders: LothianEast and LothianWest - capturing acceleration data in different portions of Lothian Island. LothianEast contains 10 * .csv files; LothianWest contains *9 .csv files. Each .csv file contains acceleration data for an individual Mini Buoy - containing equipment metadata and sub-minute measurements of acceleration data, provided as YYYY/MM/DD HH:MM:SS. Acceleration data are measured as gravity-compensated acceleration values in g-force (G).

Supplemental information

This dataset is part of a wider Mini Buoy series - where acceleration and hydrodynamics data were recorded across the Indian Ganges Brahmaputra Meghna, Mekong and Red River Deltas. Mini Buoys offer a practical and open-source way to assess the hydrological dynamics (in terms of inundation, currents and waves) of mangrove forest - allowing assessment of suitability of mangrove plantation schemes. Mini Buoys cost less than $400 to assemble, and the material to build one can be purchased around the globe.
Data can also be uploaded as part of an App, where anyone can upload Mini Buoy data and find out if a mangrove site is suitable for restoration.
