This dataset provides modelled annual average near-ground atmospheric composition for Scotland for the key air pollutants nitrogen dioxide, total nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, and fine particulate matter for the year 2023. As well as total concentrations, the dataset includes concentration contributions from domestic solid fuel burning. The dataset was created with the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme (EMEP) model version 5.5 and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 4.4.2. It was generated under a Scottish Government project which also calculated emissions from domestic solid fuel burning in Scotland and carried out measurements targeting the air pollution impacts of solid fuel burning in Scotland.

Provenance & quality

This data comprises annual average concentration outputs for selected air pollutants from the EMEP4UK rv5.5 model. The key inputs to the model are:
- hourly modelled meteorological data, generated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 4.4.2, including data assimilation from the fifth-generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric reanalysis (ERA5);
- emissions for Scottish domestic solid fuel combustion calculated by UKCEH as part of the same project, for all other sectors in the UK from the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory and for all sectors elsewhere in Europe from the Centre for Emission Inventories and Projections; and
- land surface data for the UK based on the Land Cover Map 2015 and for Europe from the EMEP repository.
The raw model outputs were compared with routine and project-specific measurements of atmospheric concentrations. Mapped concentrations were compared with routine modelling with standard emissions. The comparisons showed that the total PM2.5 is an overestimate compared to routine measurements, likely due to excessive particle-bound water, whereas the solid fuel contribution was well represented at three out of four measurement sites.
The data files for deposit were processed to calculate annual average concentrations by weighted average of monthly model outputs, calculate NOx (total nitrogen oxides) from NO and NO2, reduce the number of concentration variables and simplify file names. Contribution concentrations were calculated as the difference between model runs with all emissions and model runs with emissions omitting domestic combustion from individual fuels.
