This dataset contains information on the soil particle size distribution and the 12 & 13 CO2 fluxes from varying permafrost soil types and horizons sampled from the North West Territories and Yukon, Canada in 2019 and 2020. The soils were used in a continuous labelling experiment with live Agrostis capillaris growing into them with corresponding root-free controls. The recorded flux data is used to derive the rhizosphere priming effect in the tested soils.

Provenance & quality

The soil particle data was generated by adding dried, hydrogen peroxide digested soil subsamples to a Bettersizer S3 Plus (Bettersize Instruments Ltd., Dandong, China) soil particle analyser which integrates laser diffraction and dynamic image analysis to characterize particle size and size distribution over a wide size range.

The CO2 flux data was generated by connecting a Picarro G2000i stable isotope analyser to each of the 216 soil headspaces for 3 minutes or until stable and recording the concentrations of 12/13 CO2 and the flow of incoming air to the headspace. These data are then used to calculate a flux of CO2 from each soil. The 12&13CO2 flux is then derived using a mixing model.
