This data represents a survey of all the large trees in permanent forest plots in Danum Valley and Sepilok Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia to determine whether they were dead or alive in 2019. The data consist of individual tree ids, which can be linked back to the plot inventory data, status and some details about the mode of death.

Additional data for Sepilok reserve is available through forestplots website.

Provenance & quality
Data was collected by re-visiting all the large trees (>30 cm stem diameter in the most recent inventory) in the permanent field plots to check whether they are alive or dead. If the tree was dead, the mode of death was recorded (mostly standing dead or uprooted / snapped). If the tree had uprooted or snapped, the direction of fall and the size (magnitude estimate) of the gap in the forest canopy was recorded.
