This dataset contains daily germination rates of temperate tree species’ seed under elevated ozone fumigation in a closed chamber system. Daily counts of germinated sees were made. The seeds were exposed to an ambient and +60 parts per billion ozone treatment for approximately one month in the winter of 2024. Species tested were Betula pendula, Pinus sylvestris and Picea sitchensis. These data were collected to examine the possible effect of ozone on timing and percentage success of seed germination.

Provenance & quality

The closed chamber ozone fumigation system is located at the Climate Change Research Centre, Henfaes Farm, Abergwyngregyn. A minimum of 40 seeds were fumigated per chamber per species, maximum 80 seeds. Visual examination of seeds for radical emergence was used as the threshold for seed dormancy breaking/germination initiation, which was checked daily. New germinants for each day were recorded. Obvious errors in the data (decreases in germination total) were corrected prior to upload to EIDC. The data were collected by PhD candidate Jack Atkin-Willoughby from Bangor University and UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.
