This dataset contains acceleration data measured from 19 low-cost and open-source bottom-mounted floats called 'Mini Buoys', to identify hydrological conditions associated with thriving and failing planted mangrove patches in Thai Binh Nature Reserve in the Red River Delta, Vietnam. Data were collected between 08-09-2022 to 19-09-2022.

Provenance & quality

Data to assess the hydrological tipping point between establishing and failing planted mangrove patches was gathered at Thai Binh Nature Reserve (20°34′35″N, 106°37′09″E) along the Red River delta, Vietnam. B4+ Mini Buoys were deployed in a grid between planted mangrove trees of different ages. Each logger sampled y-axis acceleration at 1 Hz. Coordinates showing the location of each Mini Buoy deployment are expressed in WGS84 standard and available in the SurveyLocations.gpkg file.

Data are in two folders: Coordinates (containing a single SurveyLocations.gpkg file for the Mini Buoy measurements), and MiniBuoy (containing 19 .csv files). Each .csv file contains acceleration data of an individual Mini Buoy (19 in total). The MiniBuoy data files each include equipment metadata and y-axis acceleration measurements at 1Hz at sub-minute intervals (in DD/MM/YYYY MM:SS:SS).

Supplemental information

This dataset is part of a wider Mini Buoy series - where acceleration and hydrodynamics data were recorded across the Indian Ganges Brahmaputra Meghna, Mekong and Red River Deltas. Mini Buoys offer a practical and open-source way to assess the hydrological dynamics (in terms of inundation, currents and waves) of mangrove forest - allowing assessment of suitability of mangrove plantation schemes. Mini Buoys cost less than $400 to assemble, and the material to build one can be purchased around the globe.
Data can also be uploaded as part of an App, where anyone can upload Mini Buoy data and find out if a mangrove site is suitable for restoration
