Rainwater alkalinity, chloride-ion, conductivity, pH and nutrients data from the Frome Piddle; Pang Lambourn and Tern catchments, recorded between 2004 and 2006. Rainwater samples were collected fortnightly at seven sites in these catchments and analysed for Alkalinity pH 4.5, Ammonia, Chloride-ion, Conductivity 20 °C, Nitrate, pH, Phosphorus soluble reactive (SRP), Silicate reactive dissolved (SRD) and Sulphate. The samples were collected as part of the NERC funded Lowland Catchment Research (LOCAR) Programme to provide comparable baseline rainwater chemistry data across the LOCAR catchments.

         Provenance & quality
The rainwater collector was brought back to the lab by the Catchment Service Team in that catchment and used to fill a number of bottles supplied by Thames Water Laboratory. Samples for pH and alkalinity readings were poured into a glass bottle. Samples for Phosphorus soluble reactive were filtered. Unfiltered samples were used for the rest of the determinands. Samples were then sent to Thames Water for analysis. They used the Seal discrete analyser to determine values for Alkalinity pH 4.5, Ammonia, Chloride-ion, Nitrate, Phosphorus soluble reactive (SRP), Silicate reactive dissolved (SRD) and Sulphate. pH and Conductivity probes were used for those two determinands. A duplicate and a QC sample were sent each week to Thames Water to compare results obtained by the laboratories. The data were quality controlled by Thames Water. The data from the Frome Piddle catchment do not have a time associated with them. The time was not recorded when the rainwater collector was brought back from the field. In the dataset this is represented by the value 00:00. A zip file containing box-and-whisker plots for each determinand, showing the range of values (median, inter-quartile range, 1.5 * inter-quartile range, outliers) recorded at each site is available to enable prospective users of the data to understand data quality.
