This data gives acoustic index values for recordings collected in 60 broadleaved woodland restoration sites in Central Scotland (n=30) and the English Midlands (n=30), as well as 18 grassland sites in southern England. Additionally, there are recordings from 6 wildcard sites, made up of ancient woodlands (2 in Scotland and 2 in England) and rewilding sites (2 in England). There were three deployments of acoustic recorders between July 2021 and April 2022.

Provenance & quality

At each site, AudioMoth acoustic recorders were deployed for one week per deployment. The 30 woodlands in Scotland were surveyed in a first deployment between July and August 2021, and a second deployment in September 2021. All 84 sites across Scotland and England were surveyed in the third deployment in April 2021.
The same settings were used for each deployment; a sample rate of 48kHz was used, and AudioMoths recorded for 9 minutes and 55 seconds, then slept for 5 seconds, allowing nearly continuous recording throughout the week-long deployment.
The recordings were then analysed using R to calculate the following acoustic indices in the packages seewave and soundecology.
• Acoustic complexity index (ACI)
• Acoustic diversity index (ADI)
• Acoustic Evenness (AEve)
• Bioacoustic Index (Bio)
• Frequency Peaks (FP)
• Temporal Entropy (Ht)
• Spectral Entropy (Hf)
• Total Entropy (H)
• Median of the Amplitude Envelope (M)
• Normalised Difference Soundscape Index (NDSI)
Additionally, Acoustic Richness (AR) was calculated, using the Ht and M indices.
