This dataset contains measurements of sediment particle size distribution associated with denitrification rates from two saltmarshes in England (Old Hall in the Blackwater estuary, Warton Bank in the Ribble estuary) and in two seasons (Winter: December 2024/January 2025 and Summer: June/July 2025). The survey, laboratory measurements and data processing were done by Bangor University and UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology for the Environmental Agency.

Provenance & quality
Six samples of sediment were taken from across three vegetation zones (High, Mid, Low) for each combination of saltmarsh and season. The sediment samples for particle size distribution were taken at the same time as subsequent cores for determining denitrification rates published in https://doi.org/10.5285/72962722-bd56-4b3e-b397-90ceec6c821e and https://doi.org/10.5285/fd918e24-4fd8-4e32-867a-b1a1fe74ce12
The particle size distribution is expressed through:
Percent clay (<2 µm)
Percent silt (2-63 µm)
Percent mud (<63 µm)
Percent sand (63-2000 µm)
Grain-size quantiles (q10, q25, q50, q75, q90)
Mean particle size (µm)
Skewness and kurtosis alongside their categorical classifications
Folk sediment class (mud, sandy mud, muddy sand)
These metrics were calculated from sediment samples collected in the field and processed using a particle size analyser Beckman Coulter LS13 320 laser diffraction unit.
