The pollinator abundance index is calculated for different bee species (apis andreniform, apis cerana, apis dorsata, apis mellifera) in multiple years (2010, 2012, 2020) in three provinces: Dong Thap, Ca Mau and Kien Giang for both wet (rain) and dry (sunny) seasons. For each of the three provinces, data to model maps are provided to show, Pollinator abundance index (PA) which uses floral resources, seasonal activity, and pollinator supply to estimate where pollinators are actively foraging; and Pollinator supply index (PS) which combines nesting suitability, accessible floral resources, and species abundance to estimate where pollinators originate. The dominant land use for each of the three study areas are provided.

The pollinator abundance index in the InVEST Pollinator abundance model is built from several specific ecological measurements that describe bee nesting and foraging behaviour across the landscape. This study examines bees in the Mekong Delta, with the aim of assessing the impact of beekeeping activities on regional habitats using the Pollinator Abundance Index from the InVEST module.

Provenance & quality

Core Measurements integrated into the model:
1. Nesting suitability (HN)
How suitable each land-cover type is for different nesting substrates (e.g., tree cavities).
Values range from 0-1, indicating availability of nesting sites.
2. Floral resources (RA, FR)
Abundance of flowers in each land-cover type, across seasons.
Weighted by proximity to nesting sites and the pollinator's average foraging distance.
Seasonal variation is included (wet, dry, etc.).
3. Foraging activity (fa)
Seasonal activity levels of each pollinator species or guild.
Captures when bees are actively visiting flowers.
4. Flight distance (α)
Average foraging range of each pollinator species.
Used to weight floral resources by distance (closer flowers contribute more).
5. Relative species abundance (sa)
Proportion of the total pollinator community represented by each species/guild.
Ensures species are weighted according to their actual abundance.
