The dataset contains measurements of temperature (°C) and light availability (Lux) in rivers in the Hampshire Avon catchment (UK). Six rivers within sub-catchments of contrasting geology (clay, sand, chalk) were investigated. The stream sites monitored were chosen to reflect a gradient of base flow index. Data were obtained via direct, field-based measurements every 15 minutes from February 2013 to (max) December 2014 with sensors tethered to the bed of the river at each site.

Provenance & quality

All data were generated by the authors. The data comprise measurements of temperature (°C) and light (Lux) made by Onset HOBO Pendant Temperature/Light UA-002-64 data loggers (Onset Computer Corporation, 470 MacArthur Blvd., Bourne, MA 02532 USA) tethered to the bed of 6 streams, all tributaries of the Hampshire Avon. The loggers were calibrated by the manufacturer. Temperature: ±0.53°C from 0 to 50°C. Time: ± 1 minute per month at 25°C. Light: 200 - 1200 nm, 60% response 500 - 1100 nm, 100% response 900 nm. For full details, see HOBO Pendant Temperature/Light Data Logger (UA-002-xx) Manual: www.onsetcomp.com. Breaks in the continuous data occur due to removal of sensors from the river for data downloads or loss/malfunction of loggers.
