This data set details soil pH values and soil moisture values from experimental plots at a field site at Sourhope, Scotland, between 1998 and 2002. Data were collected as part of the NERC Soil Biodiversity Thematic Programme, which was established in 1999 and was centred upon the intensive study of a large field experiment located at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute (now the James Hutton Institute) farm at Sourhope in the Scottish Borders (Grid reference: NT8545019630). During the experiment, the site was monitored to assess changes in above-ground biomass production (productivity), species composition and relative abundance (diversity).

Provenance & quality
On separate sampling occasions (Mar. and Sep. 1999, Mar. 2000, Mar. and Oct. 2001, Mar. 2002) soil cores were taken from the centre area of each of the experimental plot for baseline measurements. pH values were determined for each sample, block and main-plot. Soil moisture content values were also calculated for the Sep. 1999 samples. pH was sampled before the experiment began in 1998.
In addition, two sets of samples were taken in Apr. 2000 and July 2003 from each of the general sampling sub-plots (S T U V) from within all the experimental plot types except the control 2 plots, and used to assess the variation in pH across the site. Data were collected by staff employed by the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute (MLURI) at the Sourhope experimental site before being transferred to the programme data manager at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.
