This dataset includes phenology (spring emergence) data from two of the dominant higher plant species in the experimental plots at the Climoor field site in Clocaenog Forest, NE Wales. Data includes shoot length extension and growth form for Calluna vulgaris, and shoot length, phenophase and location for Vaccinium myrtillus (please refer to supporting documentation for definitions). The data were recorded in 2000, 2002 and 2004.

Provenance & quality

Phenological development in spring was measured on 30 leading shoots randomly selected for C. vulgaris, V. myrtillus and E. nigrum in 2000, 2002 and 2004. Shoot extension was determined for the evergreen shrubs, C. vulgaris and E. nigrum. Measurements began in April and then continued over regular periods until maximum shoot elongation in September. For the deciduous shrub, V. myrtillus, budburst and phenophase were recorded as well as shoot elongation rate and number of leaves emerging, again from April until maximum growth in September. Phenophase for V. myrtillus was determined as: stage 1 - no signs of individual leaves within a bud, stage 2 - bud still closed, but individual leaves can be made out, stage 3 - bud starting to open, stage 4 - bud open by leaves not fully spread and stage 5 - leaves fully spread. Data was written down in the field, and manually entered into Excel files.
