This dataset contains the behavioural responses of moths to different lighting environments around the University of Exeter's Penryn campus, in Penryn, Cornwall, UK. The fieldwork experiments were carried out from March to October 2024. Moths were captured and then released in different lighting environments. From each release the time to move, type of movement and direction of movement was recorded. Through the analysis of the behavioural responses in variable lighting environments, we can gauge the impact of their variation on moth behaviour. The fieldwork was carried out by Maisy Inston, Charlie Rayner and Jon Bennie. Analysis was performed by Maisy Inston and Charlie Rayner.

Provenance & quality
The data presented were collected directly by fieldworkers. The raw data form either observations made by fieldworkers, or videos from camera performing moth behaviour. From these videos, the moth behaviour data presented herein were then recorded by a human. The final data were then collated into the single CSV file provided in this dataset. Each of the observations were back-checked by another person. To ensure the integrity of the data, in the event of adverse weather conditions, the fieldworking was cancelled and any collected moths were released.
