This dataset contains information about water conditions at Tatton Mere and Rostherne Mere, Cheshire over Summer 2022. Data was collected weekly as part of a study into the presence of algal blooms and the toxins they may produce. In situ testing recorded temperature, pH, oxygen and conductivity measures. Water samples were also collected and analysed in the laboratory for anion, cation and metal concentrations, chlorophyll-a concentrations and cyanobacteria identification and counts.
The work was supported by the Natural Environment Research Council (Grant NE/X011607/1).

Provenance & quality
Samples were taken on a weekly basis from three sampling locations at each site. Field measurements were conducted for pH, conductivity, oxygen and temperature, using field meters calibrated according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
For analysis of water chemistry, water samples were filtered and ran using ion chromatography (IC) to quantify chloride, nitrite, sulphate, nitrate, phosphate, sodium, ammonium, magnesium, potassium and calcium.
Chlorophyll-a samples were prepared by filtering water onto a Whatman filter paper (0.2µm) and extracted in 96% ethanol, before absorbance was measured at wavelengths of 665 and 750 nm.
Cyanobacterial were identified and enumerated using a Sedgewick-Rafter slide and analysed using a light microscope.
