We determined the soil hydrological characteristics for 51 sites located in three regions in the Corridor Ankeniheny-Zahamena (CAZ) in Madagascar. The sites differed in terms of land use and land history: closed canopy forests, reforestation sites, tree fallows, shrub fallows, degraded grassland sites and eucalyptus plantations.

Provenance & quality

At each study site, measurements and samples were taken at five locations along a ~60 m long transect. The saturated hydraulic conductivity was based on the steady state infiltration rate. For the measurements at the soil surface we used a double ring infiltrometer; for the measurements at 10 to 20 cm and 20 to 30 cm below the surface we used a constant head permeameter. At each measurement location, we collected a 100 cm3 soil core, which was analysed in the laboratory for porosity, moisture content at field capacity and bulk density. A bulk sample was taken at each study site for texture analysis.
