The dataset contains phenotypes for Moringa stenopetala (native to Kenya) and Moringa oleifera (naturalised to Kenya) from a progeny-provenance common garden trial planted in Kibwezi, Kenya, in 2018.
Moringas are economically useful species, valued especially for their nutritious leaves, seeds and soil. They are tolerant of drought and fast growing, but also vulnerable to pests (including termites and birds) and pathogens. The trial was established to quantify genetic variation in Moringa's economically important traits and to link trait variation with genomic variation.

Provenance & quality
Origin: Eight provenances of M. oleifera and two provenances of M. stenopetala were each represented by seven families across ten blocks (each contained one half-sibling from each family).
Data collection: Data were collected for a number of important traits using either repeated or one-off surveys. Repeated surveys were conducted approximately fortnightly from May 2021 to September 2022 for traits relating to phenology (leaves, flowers, and pods) and tree damage. A one-off whole-tree survey was conducted in December 2020 and included growth traits (basal diameter, height, number of stems, canopy width), canopy damage, leaf traits (leaf weight and area) and pod traits (number of green/mature pods). An additional one-off survey was conducted using pods collected in January-February 2021 for pod and seed traits (pod length/diameter, number of locules and seed, average seed weight).
