Multi-proxy data from a peat core extracted from Store Mosse National Park, south-central Sweden in September 2023. Measurements include carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, organic compounds determined via FTIR and NIR spectroscopy, inorganic geochemistry - specifically elements that may denote dust or pollution deposition, and physical properties including bulk density and pH. The core reaches 280-cm depth, of which the uppermost 200-cm are the focus of our analysis. Radiocarbon dates, supplemented by pollution deposition markers, indicate this period captures continuous peat accumulation over the last 1800 years.

Provenance & quality

The core was extracted using a Russian-type corer and sub-sampled immediately at 2-cm intervals. Bulk density was determined by subsampling the peat gently to fill a 20 ml volumetric syringe. Inorganic geochemistry was measured using a Spectro XEPOS 3 Energy Dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyser with daily standardisation checks against 18 certified reference materials. Total carbon and total nitrogen was measured via combustion on a Thermo Scientific Flash Smart Organic Elemental Analyser, using a two-point daily calibration. FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) and NIRS (Near-Infrared) spectroscopy used a Bruker Alpha 2 diamond crystal Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (ATR-FTIR) and a Bruker MPA spectrometer, respectively.
