This resource contains data on the toxicity and environmental risk of bio-based ("natural") and petroleum-based ("plastic") sequins with the aim of assessing the toxicity of these materials. Data include the toxicity for sequin particles, sequin leachates, sequin additives and a reference toxicant, changes in mass after a leaching process (degradation) and metal concentrations in both the sequins and their leachates. Toxicity was assessed using OECD 48 h Daphnia magna immobilisation assays with four replicates each of five individuals for five experimental concentrations and a control. Leaching was carried out using an incubator (INFORS HT Multitron incubator shaker) and metal concentrations were assessed using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS: PerkinElmer NexION 5000, Shelton, Connecticut, USA). Provenance & quality
Data were collected for five bio based sequins and eleven petroleum-based sequins sourced from an industry partner and University of the Arts London.
Material sheets were punched to produce 8 mm diameter circular sequins, these were weighed (1.Sequin_masses) and subject to a leaching process to assess the change in mass after a 7 d leaching process (2.Sequin_mass_changes).
The toxicity of cryoground sequin particles, sequin leachates and additives to Daphnia magna was determined alongside procedural blanks and controls (3.Sequin_toxicity_data).
Finally, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry was used to assess the concentrations of 15 metals within the sequin leachates (4.Sequin_leached_metals) and for acidified sequins (5.Sequin_digested_metals) including procedural blanks and standards.
