This dataset contains sediment deposition and suspended sediment data which were sampled at one eroding and one prograding salt marsh tidal creek at Caerlaverock, Scotland in 2023. Water level recordings were taken from pressure loggers attached to the suspended sediment samplers in the tidal creek. Reference sediment samples were taken from the salt marsh and adjacent mudflat. Data were collected to determine if sediment deposition onto salt marsh flat from the tidal creeks is different depending on the erosional/accretional state of the salt marsh.

Provenance & quality

Samples were taken at Caerlaverock, Scotland between 17-01-2023 to 13-07-2023.

Pressure loggers were attached to the suspended sediment samplers to determine inundation time, measured every 10 minutes. Water level pressure readings were corrected for atmospheric pressure from local measurements.

Sediment deposition and suspended sediment concentration were measured in tidal creeks. Suspended sediment samplers were placed within the tidal creek to capture inflowing tidal water and outflowing tidal water separately. Sediment deposition was measured using deployed plastic cups. Cups were placed next to two tidal creeks at the Caerlaverock salt marsh flat. Cups were placed within a 3x3 grid with 3 m distance. The retained sediment was processed for grain size analysis, carbon stable isotope ratio (d13C), carbon content (total, organic, inorganic).
