This dataset contains air temperature information from 786 points in Wytham Woods (Oxfordshire; Latitude: 51.7773, Longitude: -1.3385) between April 2023 and June 2025, collected every 15 minutes (~60 million temperature reads). Data were collected using TOMST thermologgers placed in trees with nest-boxes managed by the Edward Grey Institute of Field Ornithology (University of Oxford). In addition to the temperature values, the dataset contains information about the location of the thermologgers, the timestamps, and a value per logger to correct for the consistent deviations of each logger.
This data was collected under the project Understanding Within- and Between-Population Variation in Responses to Climate Variability and Extreme Climatic Events, supported by the Natural Environment Research Council (Grant NE/X000184/1). The overarching aim of the project was to study the effects of intra- and inter-annual temperature variability on great tit Parus major fitness. To do this, the project aims to combine the data obtained from the thermologgers at a fine temporal and spatial resolution with long-term life-history data of the great tit population of Wytham Woods.

Provenance & quality
This dataset contains information of 786 thermologgers (TOMST) placed across Wytham Woods between April 2023 and June 2025. Data was collected every 15 minutes.
Data was extracted from the loggers on a yearly basis using the software provided by the logger manufacturer. Data transformation consisted of collating the datasets for each logger each year into a single dataset. Data were transformed in two ways. First, readings from broken or damaged loggers were removed and now appear as NA in the dataset. Second, in some cases (0.26% of the total observations), one temperature reading in a logger was repeated several times (e.g. two observations for logger B1 on 21/12/2023 12:15:00). In cases where these repetitions represented the same temperature value (0.16% of the total), one observation in the dataset was retained. In cases where these repetitions included different values, the modal value was retained. This is described by true_value in the dataset.
